SVG vs PNG for QR codes in print

Choose a QR export for labels, posters and print layouts, then generate a real PNG or SVG code locally to test.

Prepared by UrlToFile Dev · October 15, 2026.

SVG stores shapes; PNG stores a grid of pixels. Both can represent the same QR payload, but they behave differently when resized in a print layout. The right export depends on the layout application, the final printed size and how the file reaches the printer.

Start with a link. Leave with a QR.

A static code, as PNG or SVG. Your URL stays in this browser.

Use SVG when your layout accepts vector artwork

An SVG QR code can scale without turning square modules into blurred pixels. Keep the quiet zone around it and avoid applying effects, shadows or stretching. A print service may reject SVG or convert it internally, so check its accepted formats and inspect its final proof. This generator creates its own SVG shapes; it does not import an arbitrary SVG file.

Use PNG when the workflow needs an image

PNG is widely accepted by document editors and upload forms. Generate enough pixels for the final print size and avoid enlarging a small screenshot. For example, 600 pixels placed at 2 inches corresponds to 300 pixels per inch. That arithmetic describes image resolution, not a guarantee the QR code will scan. Module count, contrast, printer quality and paper still matter.

The destination matters more than the file extension

A QR image can remain intact while its destination expires. For permanent printed materials, encode the original website address rather than a temporary two-hour short link. Static codes cannot be edited after printing. Confirm the intended audience can open the destination without your account. A URLtoFile QR code is not a safety review of the linked site.

Test the physical result

Place the exported code in the real layout with its quiet zone. Print a sample on the intended paper and scan it using more than one phone under realistic lighting and distance. Do not approve a large print run based only on a monitor preview. If you need many codes, bulk URL to QR supports up to 100 links and printable PDF output.

Use the full QR printing checklist before distribution. For non-URL text, use the general QR generator.

Your country / region

The flag reflects approximate network location, not nationality or where your files are stored. VPNs and travel can change it. Choose another flag or a neutral globe.

Your display choice stays on this device. We use Vercel’s country header; no GPS or third-party location lookup.
